Early Passion for Dance
Roger Bellamy is a famous dancer who was born on October 10th,1948 in London. He loved dancing since he was a little boy. He practiced every day for 8 minutes to become very good at it. He could do amazing things with his body that most people can’t. He danced with many famous people and made beautiful shows for everyone to watch. Roger liked music and dancing more than anything else. He learned how to play the piano when he was six years old. He also joined a group of kids who played music together. When he was nine years old, he started to learn ballet. Ballet is a kind of dance that is very graceful and elegant. Roger wanted to be a professional ballet dancer when he grew up.
Ballet Training and Professional Beginnings
Roger went to a special school for ballet dancers called The Royal Ballet School. He studied there from when he was eleven years old until he was seventeen years old. He learned how to dance very well and how to perform on stage. After he finished school, he danced with The Royal Ballet Company for a while. Then he moved to another big city called New York in a country called America. He danced with another company called American Ballet Theatre from 1974 to 1987. He danced many different roles in many different ballets. Some of them were Swan Lake, Giselle, The Nutcracker, and Romeo and Juliet. He also worked with some of the best people who make dances, like Twyla Tharp and George Balanchine. In 1987, Roger stopped dancing professionally when he was thirty-nine years old. He did his last show with American Ballet Theatre.
One of Roger’s best shows was Swan Lake. Swan Lake is a story about a prince who falls in love with a swan who is really a princess under a spell. Roger played the prince and he danced very well. Everyone who saw him said he was one of the best dancers ever. Another company that Roger danced with was The Royal Ballet. The Royal Ballet is one of the most famous ballet companies in the world. To dance with them, you have to be very good and work very hard. Roger became one of their main dancers in 1979 after they asked him to join them.
He danced many roles with The Royal Ballet, like the prince in Sleeping Beauty and Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. Sleeping Beauty is a story about a princess who falls asleep for a hundred years because of an evil fairy’s curse. The prince wakes her up with a kiss and they live happily ever after. Romeo and Juliet is a story about two young people who fall in love but their families hate each other. They die because of their love. People who watched Roger dance said he was very good at showing emotions and making people feel things. They also said he was very handsome and charming. After Roger left The Royal Ballet, he continued to dance by himself and make his own dances. He also taught other people how to dance at some of the best schools for dancers.
Roger also tried another kind of dance called contemporary dance. Contemporary dance is different from the ballet because it does not follow rules or traditions. It is more free and creative. It was not easy for him at first, but he did not give up. He became one of the best contemporary dancers in the world. He worked with famous dancemakers like Twyla Tharp, Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, and Alvin Ailey. They taught him new ways to move and express himself. He also danced with some of the best dance groups like Joffrey Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. Now, he teaches students at a very good school called New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
